To start learning photography, you must know what photography is.

Photography is the process of falling light on a photosensitive film or an electronic image sensor to create an image. Most photographs are done via a camera to focus on the scene. Literally, photography is the art of drawing made from light. Photography is imagining the vision of something in mind, and producing it with the tools in hand. We can define photography into three words: vision, imagination, and seeing.

History of Photography

Photography first developed in the 11th century by the production of Camera Obscura. The Camera Obscura produced by an Iraqi scientist to project images onto another surface. Camera Obscura wasn’t able to record images.

In 1830, Joseph Nicephore Niepce recorded the first image by improving a portable Camera Obscura. He opened a new era in photography. Other photographers followed his way and started experimenting with different chemicals and techniques.

The three following techniques developed during this era and played a significant role in the development of modern photography.

  • Daguerreotype

Joseph Nicephore Niepce and Louis Daguerre created the Daguerreotypes, which was popular until the 1850s. They coated a copper plate with silver, exposed it to iodine vapor, exposed it to light for 15 minutes, and created the Daguerreotypes.

  • Emulsion Plates

In the 1850s, Emulsion plates or wet plates became popular. Unlike Daguerreotypes, Emulsion plates didn’t need lots of time and could capture an image in 2 or 3 seconds. They were also much less expensive than the Daguerreotypes, which made it possible for all people to afford it.

These wet plates used the collodion process instead of coating images on the image plate and had two common types: Ambrotypes and Tintypes.

The Ambrotypes used a glass plate, and the Tintypes used a tin plate instead of the copper plate.

  • Dry Plates

Then in the 1870s, Richard Moddex created dry gelatine plates. Though these plates had the same speed and quality as wet plates, they could be stored and allowed for smaller portable cameras. This is the reason why they became more popular than the Emulsion plates as they gave more freedom to photographers.

In the 1880s, George Eastman established the Kodak company. He invented a flexible roll film and the hand-held camera, which had 100 film exposures. It allowed people to capture images and give them to the factory and take back the printed film.  This allowed all people to afford a camera and capture images for the first time.

In the 1930s, Henri Cartier Bresson started taking life pictures instead of staged portraits using a 35mm camera.

In the mid-1960s,  Polaroid used a secret chemical process to invent a variety of camera models and took the markets in its hands. Then in 2008, Polaroid cameras and the secret process were gone as it stopped producing the cameras.

In the late 1970s and the early 1980s, the world met the compact cameras that started a great revolutionary in photography. These cameras were able to calculate shutter speed, aperture, and focus that helps to capture more beautiful and clear images.

Then in 1991, Kodak introduced the first digital camera and paved the path for other manufactures.

Today in 2020, we have a variety of manufactures such as Canon, Nikon, and Pentax produced advanced cameras that are great for professional photography.

There are three basic tips that you must know in order to become a better photographer.

  • Avoid Camera Shake

Camera shake is one of the biggest problems in photography and decreases the picture’s quality. To avoid camera shake, you have to know how to hold your camera. Use your two hands, one around the lens and the other around the body. And finally, hold the camera close to your body to have better stability.

  • Have a Good Interaction with Your Camera

You must know your camera and interact with it. Though today’s cameras are smarter than ever, still you need to understand it clearly.

Your camera has its special features and properties. You need to know them and coordinate your body with it to take better pictures.

  • Get Close to the Object

Zoom decreases the picture’s quality. But you can get closer to the object while photographing. This gives more focus to the object and creates a better image.

You also need to know that photography is in constant change and every year has a new trend. Some trends in photography include:

  • Use Dark Backgrounds

Artists used dark backgrounds more in fine art, but today they are the new trends in 2020. These dark backgrounds give a moodier theme to the picture and turn it into a meaningful picture.

  • Nature-inspired Photography

From the time that cameras in smartphones introduced, people are able to take pictures at any time and in any place. This made people capture more life pictures than stayed portraits.

Now in 2020, you can see a greater presence of nature in photography. People prefer to use more natural elements in their pictures that add more beauty to the image

  • Choose Bold Colors

Bold colors are the new trends in photography. People started using eye-catching colors like orange and purple to attract visitors. These colors can be used in a model or background and grab lots of attention.

A photographer can use color- intense subjects as picture model to attract the vision.

Photography is an activity that can be used for fun or carrier reasons. Photography helps to capture the beautiful moments in life. But it has lots of tricks and new trends. A professional photographer must learn all these tricks and adapt to the new trends to capture better images.
