What is Art?

Generally, art is any activity that expresses our emotions and thoughts. It is the way we share our experiences with the world. Art is a part of the culture which shares the ideals and values of the culture with the world. Art is what combines different cultures and let them interact.

Where did Art Come from?

The history of art is too old, and it was created when the early humans left their artifacts behind. We can say first it was started with prehistory people, our ancestors. Art started when they drew on the cave wall, whether for interaction or other purposes.

Art continued to develop with our ancestors in the stone age. It started improving when early humans learned how to create different objects out of stone.

As the metal age started, people learned how to create the needed objects from metal, and art developed more and more.

Thousands of years later, the civilizations of Egypt and Mesopotamia developed the first official writing language using pictures. The first true writing was the Cuneiform script based on pictographic written on clay tablets. Also in Egypt, people developed the Hieroglyphic writing written on Papyrus papers.

Then, two of the great arts arose in Mesopotamia and Egypt with complex works of art. Ziggurats and the Great Pyramids are some of the examples of the great art in these civilizations.

After that, Rome and Greece unveiled another aspect of art by changing the painting and drawing models from nature and objects to humans.

But the start of modern art was in the late 18th century when the Art of Antiquity was published by Winckelmann in 1764.

From that time until now, art had a great improvement and changed its meaning. Art is no longer limited to paintings and sculpturing. Today, in the 21st century, everything from photography to web designing and digital marketing is a piece of art.

Art is classified into different categories based on their features and properties. The classifications of art include Fine art, Visual art, Plastic art, Performance art, Applied art, Decorative Art, and Digital art. Each classification has its features and is unique in its way.
